What is REDD+?

Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) is a global climate change mitigation framework developed under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). It aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions resulting from deforestation and forest degradation while promoting the conservation and sustainable management of forests and the enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries.

Forests regulate the Earth’s climate

Forests play a critical role in regulating the Earth's climate by absorbing and storing carbon dioxide (CO₂), one of the principal greenhouse gases responsible for climate change. However, when forests are cleared or degraded, the carbon stored in trees and soils is released into the atmosphere, contributing significantly to global greenhouse gas emissions.

REDD+ provides a framework through which developing countries can implement policies and measures that reduce emissions from the forest sector while simultaneously generating multiple environmental, social and economic benefits. It recognizes that forests are not only carbon sinks but also vital ecosystems that support biodiversity conservation, water regulation, livelihoods, cultural heritage and sustainable development.

The "+" in REDD+ expands the original concept of reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation by including activities that promote forest conservation, sustainable forest management and enhancement of forest carbon stocks.
