Why REDD+?

Climate change is one of the most pressing global challenges of our time, threatening ecosystems, livelihoods, and sustainable development. Forests play a critical role in addressing this challenge by acting as major carbon sinks that absorb and store atmospheric carbon dioxide. However, deforestation and forest degradation continue to release vast amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, accounting for a significant share of global emissions.

REDD+ seeks to address the underlying drivers of forest loss while creating incentives for countries to conserve and sustainably manage their forests.

REDD+ contributes to:

Over and above climate mitigation, REDD+ encourages integrated land-use planning and sustainable development by balancing environmental conservation with economic and social needs.
