PS Gitonga Mugambi Briefed on Preparations for REDD+ Global Summit 2026

Nairobi, 18 May 2026 – Forestry Principal Secretary Mr. Gitonga Mugambi received a briefing from a delegation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), led by Mr. Dirk Nemitz, on the final preparations for the REDD+ Global Summit 2026, which was held in Nairobi from 19th to 21st May 2026.
The meeting reviewed the objectives of the summit and its strategic importance in advancing global climate action through sustainable forest management, forest conservation and forest-based carbon initiatives. The summit is expected to bring together governments, development partners, technical experts and other stakeholders to strengthen international collaboration on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation while promoting sustainable forest management.
Discussions underscored the vital role of REDD+ mechanisms in enhancing climate resilience, conserving biodiversity, improving community livelihoods and contributing to global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Kenya's implementation of the Presidential #15BillionTrees Growing Programme and its broader landscape restoration agenda were recognized as significant contributions to achieving international climate commitments and the Sustainable Development Goals.
Speaking during the meeting, Principal Secretary Mugambi reaffirmed Kenya's commitment to working closely with international partners to promote climate-smart forestry interventions, strengthen forest governance and unlock opportunities for sustainable financing through nature-based solutions.
He noted that hosting the REDD+ Global Summit 2026 reflects Kenya's growing leadership in climate action and forest restoration, adding that the forum will provide a valuable platform for sharing best practices, fostering partnerships and mobilizing investments to accelerate forest conservation and sustainable development.
The meeting was attended by the Secretary for Forest Development, Mr. George Tarus, senior officials from the State Department for Forestry and members of the UNFCCC delegation.
